How to enhance your life!
Wow, I had the most incredible revelation the other day! Here it is:
Everything we do in our lives is in some way an effort to make our time on earth better.
Really think about that! We NEVER wake up in the morning and say to ourselves, "Well, here's another day, I wonder what I can do today to make today miserable." It's ALWAYS ways that we want to enhance our existence. From the moment we realize we are awake until our last conscious breath at night we make decisions like, "Hmm, which cereal would I like best this morning, or what water temperature feels most comfortable to me, or which combination of clothes looks and feels best and on and on and on! If you really think about this and how it applies to your own life it's really quite amazing!
I should also mention that sometimes we realize we need to go through discomfort in order to achieve a goal we set for ourselves. For example, in exercise sometimes it can get pretty painful but we do it because we know that if we toil through the pain, we will achieve a result that makes us look and feel better about ourselves which enhances our lives.
So many times though, we subconsciously do things to shoot our legs out from under ourselves and undermine our own efforts.
I guess the best way to say this is just to say that, "We reap what we sow....." and "What goes around comes around...." In other words, the Golden Rule! People treat us the way we treat them. You can even think of it in this way - in most cases, you only receive emails from people whom you take the time to write yourself, right? Like the Bible says, "To have friends one must show himself to be friendly." We have to take the initative and what we put out recriprocates and comes back to us like a boomerang!
So, if we want someone to treat us with more respect but we are constantly cutting down other people with our attitudes, more than likely, we are going to get treated the same way. It becomes a vicious cycle and the only way to break it is with doing the exact opposite and treating that person how you'd like to be treated and they will begin to treat you the same way. It is very counter-intuitive but it's an amazing testament to how radical the teachings of Jesus are and yet how we can use them everyday to relate to people to make our lives and the lives of those around us better.
Luke 6:35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return. And your reward shall be great, and you shall be the sons of the Highest. For He is kind to the unthankful and to the evil.
Luke 6:36 Therefore be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
Luke 6:37 Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you shall be forgiven.
Luke 6:38 Give, and it shall be given to you, good measure pressed down and shaken together and running over, they shall give into your bosom. For with the same measure that you measure, it shall be measured to you again.
